PREFACE.

In 1876, after an absence of twenty-five years, I returned to
Bucks County on a visit, and had the pleasure of seeing all of the
papers which conveyed lands from William Penn to William Yardley
(the emigrant), which papers are now in the possession of A. S.
Cadwallader, at Yardley. On this occasion I for the first time learned
the fact that we were not the descendants of William (the emigrant),
but of his nephew, Thomas, who came to America in 1 704. With
this new light, a desire to know more of our ancestors was
awakened, and I was encouraged to commence this investigation of
the family history. My success has been greater than I anticipated,
but I leave much undone for others, who may desire to go farther
into the records of the past, to make my work still more complete.
As will be seen I have only given the descendants of the oldest son
of our English ancestor ; the other sons left no descendants, and
the descendants of the daughters I have not attempted to trace.

If the result of my labor here and researches in England shall
give pleasure and interest to the family, I shall not have labored
in vain.

THOMAS W. YARDLEY.
Yardley, Pa., July, 1881.

NOTE.

For convenience of reference, and to facilitate a quick understanding of the
line of direct descent, various devices of numbers and types have been used.

The descendants of John Yardley are numbered, to distinguish each, by the
figures at the left of the page ; and such of them as became heads of families,
have their distinctive numbers repeated in large type in the middle of the page,
over the statement of their marriage. A heavy antique letter has been adopted
in printing their names, and an italic letter for the names of those to whom
they were married.

YARDLEY.

The first record we have of the name, is that of " William
Yardley, L. M.," a witness to the signing of the first Magna Charta
given by John I to England, dated June 15th, 121 5. "The great
charter was executed in the presence of many of the clergy and
nobles." It is possible his ancestors first made their appearance in
England as followers of William the Conquerer; but, from the time of
this invasion to the year 121 5, and from this date to 1400, we have
not obtained any well-connected trace of the name. From 1400 to
1682, when the emigrant William Yardley came to America, the
records found are complete.

In the " Patronymica Britannica" we find the family is spoken of as
an ancient one, with residence in Staffordshire, England, and whose
heads were called " lords of Yardley."

Their coat of arms are " argent, on a chevron azure three garbs
or, on a canton gules, a fret or," Crest, "a buck, courant, gu.
attired or."

In the absence of reliable information previous to the year 1400,
we commence with the

9th GENERATION.

10. Samuel.

11. Thomas came to America in 1704, and married Ann, daughter
of William Biles, of Pennsburry, Bucks County, Pa.

William (the emigrant) married Jane . There were three

sons, Enoch, William and Thomas. They emigrated to America with
their servant, Andrew Heath, " in the good ship Friend's Adventure,"
arriving in the Delaware River 7th month 28th, 1682. Soon there-
after they located on the west side of the river, three miles above
the falls where is now the city of Trenton, N. J., and near the present
town of Yardley, Bucks County, Pa., on the land purchased under
an agreement with Wm. Penn, dated 3d month 20th, 1681, [this
was only sixteen days after the grant from Charles II to Wm. Penn],
covering some five hundred acres. The consideration-money was
£\o, as per receipt, and deed bearing date 3d month 21st, 1681,
[now in the possession of A. S. Cadwallader, at Yardley, Bucks
County]. The location of the land was made, the survey completed
and patent issued 10th month 20th, 1682. The place was called
" Prospect Farm," and by that name it is now known.

As an additional inducement to the first settlers to purchase not
less than five hundred acres, Wm. Penn gave to each purchaser of
that amount a lot of ground to be located in the city of Philadelphia.
Lot No. 8, north of Chestnut Street, extending from Second to Third
Streets, was given to Wm. Yardley. After his death, his sons (who
were his heirs) sold the lot to Edward Shippen, of Philadelphia, 8th
month 2 1 st, 1696; the deed, however, was not recorded until 7th
month 28th, 1768.

With the exception of a few years, " Prospect Farm " has always
been in the possession of some member of the Yardley family. It
is now owned by, and is the residence of, Thomas S. Cadwallader.

At the time of William Yardley's death, he was an active member

THE YARDLEY FAMILY. x ^

of the Society of " Friends." Thomas Janney, in his " Memorials
Concerning the Lives of the Early Colonists," says : " That in his
(William Yardley's) early life, he sought the knowledge of God, and
joined in society with a spiritually-minded people, who called them-
selves ' the family of love/ He afterward was convinced of the prin-
ciples of ' Friends,' and, joining in fellowship with them, was called
to the ministry about the twenty-third year of his age. He traveled
in various parts of the nation, preaching the Gospel, and suffered
imprisonment for conscience' sake nineteen weeks, during seventeen
of which his only resting-place was the bare floor of his cell. He
represented Bucks County in the first Colonial Assembly, and was
afterward an active member of the Provincial Council." ist month,
7th, 1686, Thomas Janney offered " Slate Pitt Hill" to Falls Meeting
of " Friends " as a burying-ground. It was accepted, and deeded to
Wm. Yardley and others, in trust forever, for that purpose. It is
now known as the " Stone Grave-yard," and is situated one mile east
of Yardley, on the road to Fallsington. From that time till 1800, it
was the principal burying-ground for " Friends ;" and, doubtless, in
these grounds were buried all the Yardleys who died in this country
prior to the Revolutionary War.

Soon after the death of William's wife, Jane, 6th month 28th, 1691,
he bequeathed by will to his eldest son, Enoch, one-half of " Prospect
Farm," and the remaining half to William and Thomas. They, by
deed dated 4th month 4th, 1 702, conveyed their moiety to Enoch.

Enoch, eldest son of William and Jane Yardley, married Mary,
daughter of Robert Fletcher, of Philadelphia, Pa., 10th month ,
1697.

The records of Bucks County show that small-pox prevailed to an
alarming extent in the southern townships of the county in the
winter of 1 702-3 ; this will doubtless account for the great mortality
of the Yardley family at that time.

Mary Yardley, widow of Enoch, married Joseph, son of Matthew
and Maudlin Kirkbride, of the parish of Kirkbride, County Cum-
berland, England [she was his third wife]. He was born 7th month
29th 1662; came to America in 1681, and settled in Falls Town-
ship, Bucks County, Pa. On the 13th of 1st month, 1688, he was

were married in meeting of M Friends." In his marriage certificate
he is called "yoeman."

Sarah, died 9th month 29th, 1703. leaving one child, Mahlon, born
9th month 3d, 1 703, who married Mary, daughter of John and Mary
Setcher, of Pennsbury, Bucks County.

children; among them there was one daughter, Sarah, born 12th
month 13th, 1729, who married William Yardley (17) for his second
wife, 3d month 31st, 1756. She died 1st month 21st, 1783, leaving

Hester (nee Baker) Yardley, widow of Thomas, married William,
son of James Browne, of Chichester or Concord, Chester County,
Pa., 8th month , 1 704.

William Yardley (9) the emigrant, his wife, children and grand-
children all being dead, his property in America reverted to his heirs-
at-law in England, who were his brother Thomas (8) and nephew
Samuel (10).

In 1704, we find Thomas (11) "the younger," son of Thomas (8)
and brother of Samuel (10), in Philadelphia, Pa., with power of at-
torney from his father and brother for the sale of the property and
settlement of the estate (of William the emigrant, deceased). He
was to receive one-fifth of the net proceeds as compensation there-
for. Samuel Carpenter, Richard Hough and Richard Heath were
empowered to co-operate therein.

" Prospect Farm" was sold 5th month 25th, 1710, to Joseph Jan-
ney for "three hundred and fifty pounds, current money of Pennsyl-

vania," and was so deeded by Carpenter, Heath and Yardley, " the
younger."

6th month 14th, 1710, Thomas Yardley (n) purchased the same
from Joseph Janney, for the same consideration, and it was so deeded.

In 1800, Thomas Yardley was appointed by the Governor of
Pennsylvania one of the Justices of Bucks County.

The following short sketch of the character of Thomas Yardley,
by Wm. R. Atlee, of Yardleyville, appeared in the Bucks County
Intelligencer soon after his death :

" It is seldom we hear of the fall of such a man. To his family
and friends their loss will be irreparable, and society will lament it
as a void not easily to be filled. In all the relations of husband,
father, citizen and friend, he had but few equals — no superior. In
his intercourse with others, he was courteous and polite ; in all his
dealings, rigidly honest and scrupulously punctual, never delaying
for to-morrow the duties of to-day. He always acted in conformity
to the golden rule, of doing as he would be done by. In morals he
was sound, even to fastidiousness ; in religion firm and consistent,
though liberal and tolerant. As a member of the society of
1 Friends,' he zealously supported the principles he professed, and lived
just long enough to witness and regret the schism which threatened
to shake the church of his fathers to its foundation. Mr. Yardley's
mind was naturally strong and discriminating, and, by much profita-

ble reading and intercourse with the best society, had become highly
cultured ; hence, in strength and soundness of judgment, he had but
few equals in his county.

" When called to the performance of any of those duties to which
all are liable, and which all owe to their country and to each other,
he was ever ready; nor did he ever decide without maturely con-
sidering his subject; and, although ever open to conviction, his
opinions, when formed, and decisions, when made, were pertina-
ciously adhered to. In deciding questions submitted to his consid-
eration, he was governed by the strict rule of right, when compatible
with legislative enactments ; but his firm conviction of the weight of
legal enactments upon all never permitted him to infringe any of its
known and defined rules to serve the views of any person.

" The widow and the orphan, to whose interests and concerns a
great part of his time had been devoted, will feel the loss of a zeal-
ous advocate and friend, and the honest and industrious poor of a
benefactor, whose place to them will not be easily supplied."

The following notice of the death of Edward Yardley appeared
in the Miners Journal of Pottsville, Schuylkill County, Penna.

" We regret deeply to announce the death, at one o'clock Saturday
morning last, of Edward Yardley, one of our oldest and most
respected citizens, at Bethlehem, Penna. The fatal disease to which
he succumbed was paralysis.

" Edward Yardley was born near Yardleyville, Bucks County,
Penna., November 6th, 1802, and came to Pottsville to reside August
23d, 1843. He descended from an old English family, most of
whom united with George Fox, the great Quaker and leader of that
sect. His immediate ancestors came to this country with Wm.
Penn, whilst the other branch of the family settled in Virginia [Sir
George Yardley having been appointed one of the three Colonial
Governors of that province]. In early life he married a grand-
daughter of Thomas Lancaster, a celebrated Quaker preacher.

" Mr. Yardley was a thorough Quaker, both through a long line

of Quaker blood as well as by religious conviction, and, during an
active life, through prosperity and adversity, he was known as a just
man.

" Mr. Yardley was the first to suggest the erection of a monu-
ment to Henry Clay, the great statesman, and, in connection with
his ever true friends, Franklin Hewson and Samuel Sillyman, the
first monument to Henry Clay was erected in Pottsville, Penna."
